Computers & IT

Computer skills are an indispensable part of students’ educational development and future job prospects, and are best introduced when very young. Students are currently using the Microsoft Office software programs which include word-processing, paint, excel and powerpoint. Students also play educative computer games, have acquired knowledge in photo uploading and editing.Through our planned software and internet training initiatives, StreetWise will make a true and definitive commitment to its students’ future growth and success.

English

StreetWise places a strong emphasis on English language mastery and as it is a universal language for work and technology, and will place our students as potential players inside the job market.

Emphasis is placed in both spoken English - through routine activities and role-playing, and reading. We are developing one-on-one reading buddy sessions, where volunteers spend time reading with individual students. Reading opens many doors, it increases student curiosity, imagination, socialization (by reading to others), and even computer skills through e-books. With English proficiency, our children will have greater growth potential.

Art

Art serves as a bridge between cultures and socioeconomic barriers. At StreetWise we use art to capture our students’ imagination and channel their energies in positive ways. It also serves as a form of therapy without the stigma. Through art, we can help our students individually and provide counseling when needed.

Photography

Photography works in much the same way as art, as it promotes creativity and grants expression. Through our digital photgraphy classes, children learn to work with and master modern technology, as they also learn how to upload and edit photos onto computers. Moreover, coming from a background where students didn’t own any photographs in their households, access to photography has been a tremendous build-up for their identities. At StreetWise, every student now has a photo album where they conserve photos of friends and family and meaningful experiences that represent who they are.

Dance

Dance is a realm which not only serves as a creative outlet, but offers many other positive benefits in student development. Dance promotes self-confidence and respect. Dance helps develop key skills, such as coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, stamina, discipline and even memory. At StreetWise students are introduced to dance movement therapy, Bengali folk dance, and free-style dance. They are encouraged to choreograph their own dance moves.

Sports

Sports induce physical fitness, stress relief, mastery and healthy habits. Personal benefits include resilience, attitude control, leadership opportunities, identity and balance, time management, long-term thinking. Social benefits provide relationship with other children and adults and teamwork.

Currently, the students are engaged in a Sports collaboration with AUSIS. Every Saturday, they get together with a group of High School Students from the Australian International School and engage in different team sports.

Health & Hygiene Life Skill Theme

To underprivileged children health and hygiene are luxuries, both in terms of knowledge and resources, yet of crucial importance to their overall well-being. Even if they have the basic knowledge, the environment they live in does not always allow them to practice that knowledge as clean water is difficult to come by, and they still suffer from and are prone to contagious diseases all around them.

By introducing a Life Skill Theme such as Health & Hygiene through the context of a subject like Home-Economics, or Computers, or Bangla (or any other subject for that matter), we offer our students practical lesson plans and activities that give them a concrete understanding of the theme itself and the subject through which it is taught.

General Classes

In order to establish a strong foundation and mastery of the Bangla-medium system, students are enrolled by Streetwise at a local public school following the national curriculum. Based on their age and aptitude, students have enrolled in Class 1 to 4 at the Bhola Government School, Badda, Dhaka, located within walking distance. Students in Class 1 and 2 study Bangla, Math and English; while students in Class 3 and 4 in addition study Social Studies and Science. StreetWise recognizes that proficiency in their mother-tongue aids children to communicate within their community and prevent problems of identity loss and/or alienation in the long-term.

StreetWise Classes

To achieve bi-literacy and place an academic emphasis in both languages, designated classes at StreetWise are taught in English and others in Bangla. StreetWise Classes supplement students’ school classes by offering preparatory studies for school enrollment and its own inquiry into the same subjects, using interactive and participative teaching and learning methodololgies. It also provides, regular revision, tutoring and exam preparation sessions; helping to make each subject more meaningful and comprehensible to students and improve their overall academic outcomes.

StreetWise also offers a range of classes not offered by the government school, but equally crucial to children’s development. These classes are designed to instill a love of learning, to develop intellectual aptitude, encourage physical growth and emotional well-being, to nurture creativity, and develop practical and employable skills, ensuring future employment.

Life Skills Themes

When students explore interdisciplinary themes through various subjects, learning outcomes are greater. Themes also provide the opportunity to incorporate local and global issues into the curriculum which make it more relevant.

At StreetWise we are developed a set of Life Skills Themes that are vital to our students’ personal and environmental contexts. Life Skills Themes are stand alone units of inquiry that can be inserted into any of our StreetWise classes. We have developed a Health & Hygiene Life Skill Theme, and are in the process of developing the following themes: Money Management, and Entrepreneurship.

Extracurricular Activities

Students actively participate in a host of inter-school and partner exchanges in creative arts, sports, educational and recreational field trips. These activities promote interaction with different communities, increase student exposure and confidence, which cultivate social and leadership skills.

Employable Skills

Although StreetWise’s main focus is to provide education, we want to offer our students the opportunity to develop employable skills. Inserting vocational themes within the curriculum has proved to facilitate trade skills, while complementing and enhancing student education. We also intend to partner with already exsisting skills training and job and job placement institutes to facilitate our students’ transition from the educational to the working world.
